CFHI Bids a Fond Farewell to Inaugural EXTRA Advisory Council Chair Dr. Jean Rochon and Announces Dr. Terry Sullivan as New Chair

After more than 12 years, Dr. Jean Rochon has stepped down as the inaugural Chair of CFHI’s Executive Training Program (EXTRA) Advisory Council. It is with great pride that we celebrate Dr. Rochon’s many contributions.

Dr. Rochon has been integral to the EXTRA program since it was established in 2004, chairing the Advisory Council through 12 cohorts. His strategic vision has helped EXTRA evolve into the premier health leadership and quality improvement training program it is today.

Dr. Rochon has had a prestigious career as an academic, public health physician and politician. He spent many years in key leadership positions in Quebec, including as Minister of Health and Social Services and Dean of Medicine at the Université Laval. Dr. Rochon was also Director of Health Protection and Promotion Division at the World Health Organization. Dr. Rochon holds doctorate and master’s degrees in public health from Harvard University, a degree in law and medicine from the Université Laval, and an honorary doctorate from Université Catholique de Louvain in Belgium.

CFHI is pleased to announce that Dr. Terry Sullivan, long-time CFHI faculty and EXTRA Academic Coordinator, will chair the EXTRA Advisory Council. Dr. Sullivan is also the independent board chair of the Canadian Agency for Drugs and Technologies in Health (CADTH) and chairs the board quality committee of the Hospital for Sick Children. Dr. Sullivan served as President and CEO of Cancer Care Ontario for seven years. A behavioural scientist, Dr. Sullivan has provided a range of professional advisory services to governments and healthcare organizations in Canada and internationally, including CFHI.

CFHI is profoundly grateful to Dr. Rochon for his unwavering commitment to the EXTRA program.

Dr. Rochon will be honoured at the EXTRA Program Cohort 12 graduation ceremony in June 2017, when the inaugural Dr. Rochon Award will be granted to the EXTRA improvement team that best exemplifies what it means to work collaboratively to lead improvement.

“[Dr. Rochon is]…a man of enormous integrity and humility, a person of great intellectual breadth and someone who has been a bridge builder in Québec and in Canada for the whole [EXTRA] program. Those of us associated with the program owe him an enormous debt.”

Terry Sullivan, Academic Coordinator, EXTRA, CFHI

“There is no way that we would have had the success in EXTRA that we have had in Quebec without [Dr. Rochon], but the rest of Canada, and the rest of EXTRA have benefited from Dr. Rochon’s wise leadership.”

Maureen O’Neil, O.C., President, CFHI
