This synthesis reviews methods for increasing revenues for healthcare. It describes how social insurance functions along with national insurance in four European countries, namely Germany, France, Finland and Switzerland. Key elements are described for each country, such as populations and services covered under each financing model (public, social, private), the role of the different actors, funding mechanisms and the current issues faced by the healthcare system.
