A-Z Topics

The concepts of efficiency and value-for-money are central to ensuring the sustainability of publicly funded healthcare systems. Fuelled by relatively high spending and mediocre performance in comparative analyses, in recent years Canadian governments and health leaders have increasingly focused on improving health system performance by enhancing efficiency.

Efficiency refers to how effectively resources are used to achieve an objective. The concept can help us understand whether healthcare resources are being used to get the best value-for-money. Although there is no widely accepted definition of better value in healthcare, it relates to the reliability with which investments lead to improved outcomes.

Working with CFHI, health leaders are making real improvements in efficiency and generating greater value for the $228 billion Canada is estimated to have spent on healthcare in 2016.
