Making Sense of Costs: Capturing Costs in Healthcare Improvement

Held November 12, 2014

The second of 3 webinars in our Measurement for Quality Improvement Webinar Series

Synopsis

In healthcare, we endlessly hear about resource use and costs: from cost-cutting and cost containment to return on investment, value for money and efficiency gains to cost-benefit and issues of sustainability. For those working at the clinical frontline, the cost conversation can sometimes seem far removed from their modus operandi of delivering the best possible patient care. And yet, for those who control the purse strings, the ‘business case’ matters: What will it cost and what resources will it take to initiate an improvement or pilot a new program? What will it take to sustain a new program or service?

This session of On Call is for those at the frontlines of improvement who recognize the value of capturing costs, but may not know how or where to start. Join Dr. Nicole Mittmann, Executive Director of the HOPE Research Centre and an Associate Scientist at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, as she makes sense of costs.

Learning Objectives:
  • Gain an introductory understanding of resource use and costs using case examples of healthcare improvement
  • Learn where to source data on resources and costs and ways to think about ‘units’ of measurement that are applicable to your quality improvement needs, be they related to developing and sustaining new improvements or program; or, understanding per capita cost of care and efficiency gains
  • Learn ways to embed economic parameters into your data collection processes
