Saskatchewan deputy minister of health Dan Florizone receives national health award

DFlorizoneOTTAWA, February 14, 2011—Saskatchewan’s deputy minister of health Dan Florizone is the 2011 winner of the Excellence through Evidence award from the Canadian Health Services Research Foundation (CHSRF). The award celebrates leaders who have accelerated change and strengthened healthcare in Canada.

With nearly 25 years of experience in Saskatchewan’s healthcare system, Florizone’s notable contributions include executive sponsorship of the province’s Patient First Review, which consulted Saskatchewan residents to determine ways to improve the patient experience and the delivery of health services. He was also the first health region CEO in Saskatchewan to implement the concepts of “Lean” in healthcare, an approach that increases efficiency in order to provide the highest level of care to the patient. Lean has since spread to the rest of the province’s healthcare system.

Dan Florizone, Saskatchewan's deputy minister of health, addressing the CEO Forum after accepting the 2011 Excellence through Evidence award.

“Dan Florizone believes that system-wide transformation can take place in Saskatchewan healthcare, and he consistently inspires and motivates others to work toward that shared goal,” says CHSRF president Maureen O’Neil. “Dan was an obvious choice for CHSRF’s Excellence through Evidence award—his work across Saskatchewan has contributed to a solid and lasting foundation for better care of patients based on good evidence.”

“I am thrilled, honoured and humbled by this recognition,” says Florizone. “The real credit for transforming care in Saskatchewan and applying evidence in practice should go to those leaders at every level of the Ministry and the health system in Saskatchewan who are making it happen. Patient First has become a mantra, driving effectiveness, efficiency and evidence-informed health service delivery. This recognition is shared with each of them.”

Before becoming deputy minister of Health, Florizone was CEO of the Five Hills Health Region, the Moose Jaw-Thunder Creek Health District and the South-East Health District. He has held senior positions in hospitals, served as assistant deputy minister of Health, and is former chair of the Saskatchewan Health Quality Council.

Florizone will receive the Excellence through Evidence award on Wednesday, February 16 in Montreal at CHSRF’s annual CEO Forum, a one-day event for healthcare leaders from across Canada.

The Canadian Health Services Research Foundation is an independent, not-for-profit corporation with a mandate to promote the use of evidence to strengthen the delivery of health services that improve the health of Canadians. CHSRF is funded through an agreement with the Government of Canada.
