Employee-led change is a leadership strategy by which managers provide support for employees who develop, implement, and evaluate the change. During this session of Researcher on Call, Dr. Smailes and Ms. Kidd discussed a work environment model that they developed as part of B.C.'s Changing the Workplace initiative. More specifically, they described how they used this model to evaluate the feasibility of employee-led change in 18 acute care units across the province.

Dr. Smailes and Ms. Kidd honed in on three main questions:

  1. Why is this study important?
  2. What are the main findings?
  3. What are the study's recommendations for implementing employee-led change?

Catherine Kidd, RN, MN, regional Director, Worksafe & Wellness for Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH), leads the VCH team responsible for all aspects of employee health and safety.

The team's programs focus on prevention, early intervention, workplace wellness, and disability management. Catherine is an adjunct professor with the School of Nursing, University of B.C. Catherine also participates in a variety of research activities at VCH related to developing a safety culture and to occupational health and safety topics, such as safe patient handling and violence in the workplace. This work is in collaboration with a variety of researchers from the Occupational Health and Safety Agency for Healthcare in BC (OHSAH), the Partners in Community Health Research Workplace Health Cluster at the University of BC (UBC), the Institute for Health Promotion Research (IHPR) at UBC, and the Centre for Applied Research in Mental Health and Addictions, Simon Fraser University. Catherine has extensive experience in direct care, education, senior management, and research.

Dr. Elizabeth Smailes is an adjunct professor with the Sauder School of Business at University of British Columbia, and the Director of Mental Health and Organizational Development at the Occupational Health and Safety Agency for Healthcare in BC (OHSAH).

She conducts research in organizational and cultural change best practices in collaboration with stakeholders from healthcare, unions and academia. Dr. Smailes joined UBC and OHSAH from Columbia University, where she was an assistant professor in the Department of Sociomedical Sciences, School of Public Health. At Columbia University she completed her Ph.D. in psychology as a Fulbright Scholar, and investigated selection and causal relationships between work stressors and employees' poor mental health, including depression, anxiety and alcohol use.
