Families are more than visitors. They’re partners in care. Family presence policies enable patients to designate family members or other loved ones to have unrestricted access to them during their hospitalization. Studies show that having unlimited access to family and loved ones reduces complications and stress for everyone involved, and improves the patient’s overall experience of care and outcomes in hospital.

Many leading hospitals and health systems around the world have begun implementing family presence policies, including here in Canada. CFHI has partnered with the Maryland-based Institute for Patient- and Family-Centered Care, a not for profit organization dedicated to promoting patient and family engagement in healthcare, on the Better Together: Partnering with Families Campaign. This campaign is supporting hospitals across North America to implement family presence guidelines.
