A - Z TopicsPatient experience is one domain used to evaluate the quality of health services. Increasingly, patient experience is becoming a top priority in healthcare. The Beryl Institute defines patient experience as, “the sum of all interactions, shaped by an organization’s culture, that influence patient perceptions across the continuum of care.” Improving the experiences of patients and their families is an important aspect of delivering patient- and family-centred care.

CFHI’s work in patient and family engagement addresses patient experience and other quality domains such as safety and effectiveness. Over the years, many CFHI-supported teams working in the Patient Engagement Projects and EXTRA: Executive Training programs have implemented projects that have improved patient experience. The Better Together: Partnering with Families campaign promoting family presence policies also promises to improve the experiences of patients and their families in hospital; as hospitals and other healthcare facilities adopt family presence policies family members will be recognized not as ‘visitors’ but as partners in care.
