Canada continues to face persistent challenges in achieving efficient, coordinated, patient-and family-centred healthcare in all provinces and territories. Our health system places below the middle of the pack in international comparisons and has done so for many years. Transformation requires new approaches that address today’s realities—a growing population, changing patterns of health and disease, and the sustainability of the health system—to align payment systems and incentives in a way that meets the needs of Canadians and health system funders.

CFHI is building a suite of programs that focus on accelerating health system transformation in Canada.

What is Value-Based Healthcare (VBHC)?

Value-Based Healthcare (VBHC) is becoming a leading approach to improving patient and health system outcomes around the world. It is one-way of organizing healthcare to transform health outcomes.

VBHC is about linking the dollars spent to outcomes that matter to patients, rather than to the volumes of services, processes or products that may or may not achieve those outcomes.

VBHC aims is to deliver services that are high value, scale back or drop those that do not, and/or re-balance the mix of services to improve the ratio of outcomes to overall costs. The goal is better outcomes at the same or lower total cost.

Under our collaborative approach to transformation, CFHI is working closely with our expert faculty and advisors to pinpoint lessons learned, opportunities and barriers to value-based healthcare (VBHC) innovation in Canada.

Value-Based Healthcare Summit: Transforming Healthcare by Redefining Value
March 2018

CFHI co-sponsored a Value-Based Healthcare Summit (VBHC) on March 19th, 2018 at the Rotman School of Management in Toronto, Ontario. The event brought together health system leaders, healthcare providers, patient organizations, governments, industry and other stakeholders interested in developing and implementing VBHC initiatives at all levels of health systems.

This inaugural summit provided an overview of the key concepts and project profiles from Canada and around the world. Summit participants were asked to share their perspectives on the development of a pan-Canadian network to support value-based healthcare initiatives on an ongoing basis.

Transforming Health Services: Identifying the Most Promising Opportunities for Value-Based Healthcare Design Day, August 2018

On August 16, 2018, CFHI held a design day to build on the work that began at the March 2018 VBHC Summit to consider the most promising opportunities for VBHC in Canada and identify the key criteria that leaders, organizations, and governments can use to select opportunities to champion and drive greater value throughout the patient journey based on the outcomes of greatest importance to patients.
