#PatientEngagement Advocate Vincent Dumez Joins CFHI Board

Ottawa, Canada – September 24, 2015 : The Canadian Foundation for Healthcare Improvement is pleased to announce the addition of Vincent Dumez to its Board of Directors. As an organization that champions the participation of patients and families in healthcare improvement, CFHI is committed to bringing their perspectives to the boardroom table. Mr. Dumez’s skills and experience as a leading advocate for patient and family engagement in healthcare will help CFHI advance patient engagement in Canada’s health systems.

Vincent Dumez Mr. Dumez is Co-director of the Collaboration and Patient Partnership Unit in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Montreal. Living with three chronic diseases that cause him to require frequent access to healthcare has put him at the forefront of developing the concept of ‘patient partnerships’ within the healthcare setting. He first explored this idea in a master’s thesis entitled “Quebec’s tainted blood scandal or the failure of the doctor-patient relationship.” Since then, Mr. Dumez has advanced the concept of patient partners by training patients with chronic diseases on self-management techniques, working on the boards of community organizations, and speaking at healthcare conferences. Mr. Dumez has been working in his current capacity at the University of Montreal since 2010.

CFHI supports initiatives that engage patients and families in designing, delivering and evaluating health services, with the goal of improving the quality of care. Co-designing improvements with patients and families leads to new insights and better results than providers and leaders working on their own. A recent CFHI Evidence Boost, by G. Ross Baker of the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation at the University of Toronto found that greater engagement of patients and families in organizational roles and care teams has helped a number of healthcare organizations to improve quality, safety and patient experience.

CFHI is currently leading the Partnering with Patients and Families for Quality Improvement collaborative focused on harnessing the tremendous potential of patient and family engagement to drive quality improvement in healthcare. The collaborative provides funding, coaching and other support to help 22 teams from Canadian healthcare organizations engage patients and families in designing, delivering and evaluating healthcare services with the goal of better patient care and outcomes.

Vincent Dumez holds a finance degree and a master’s degree in Management Science from HEC Montréal. Until 2010, he was an associate in one of Montreal’s most influential consulting firms, specializing in organizational design. Mr. Dumez worked for more than a decade as a strategic consultant for large enterprises undergoing transformations.
