Statement by Lynn Stevenson, Chair, CFHI Board of Directors
The Canadian Foundation for Healthcare Improvement (CFHI) is a not-for-profit organization funded by the Government of Canada dedicated to accelerating healthcare improvement. CFHI plays a unique pan-Canadian role in spreading healthcare innovations.
After more than 10 successful years at the helm of CFHI, Maureen O’Neil’s term as President and CEO will end on September 4, 2018. Maureen has committed to assisting us through to this next chapter and on behalf of the Board of Directors I am announcing that we will begin a search for a new President and CEO in the coming months.
Before we start the search process, we would like to take a moment to acknowledge the significant accomplishments and achievements of Maureen and her team, without whom we would not be where we are today.
Maureen O’Neil O.C. joined the Canadian Foundation for Healthcare Improvement – formerly the Canadian Health Services Research Foundation (CHSRF) – in September 2008 as President of the organization. Under Maureen’s leadership, the organization created and formalized the evaluation and performance management function as an important step in demonstrating CFHI’s value and impact in healthcare improvement. In 2009, Maureen led CFHI through a strategic and organizational review that established new strategic priorities and in 2011 developed a new vision and mission with new goals set in 2012. This exercise also identified new skills and expertise that would be required to support the spreading and scaling of innovations across the country. These skills included analytical and economic assessment abilities, program development capabilities and quality improvement skills. In 2012, Maureen oversaw the rebranding of the organization from the Canadian Health Services Research Foundation (CHSRF) to the Canadian Foundation for Healthcare Improvement to reflect the evolution of the organization and its mandate into a healthcare improvement organization. In 2014, CFHI launched its first three collaboratives in healthcare quality improvement.
Today, CFHI has a proven record of improving healthcare through a unique approach for identifying, spreading and scaling innovations that also builds capacity for transformation. Maureen brought us to this place.
Maureen successfully led the organization through three federal budget funding submissions, under two different governments, and solidified CFHI’s future with ongoing funding. In 2015, CFHI received renewed federal funding of $14 million over two years. Additional federal funding of $39 million over three years was announced in March 2016 with further federal funding of $51 million over three years starting in 2019–20 – with $17 million per year ongoing – announced in Budget 2017. This funding renewal enhances CFHI’s ability to plan for the long term and achieve even greater impact with our partners.
Under Maureen’s leadership, strategic partnerships with other pan-Canadian health organizations, provincial quality councils and others have grown since 2016 thanks to CFHI’s funding certainty and ability to plan for the long term.
Thanks to Maureen’s leadership, CFHI is well-positioned to continue to develop and spread innovative solutions to pressing healthcare challenges and improve the delivery of healthcare services for all Canadians.
We are grateful that Maureen will be assisting us in the transition as we move through the process to recruit a new CEO. While we will have many more opportunities to thank her for her contributions and commitment, we wanted to do so here, formally and publicly. Thank you, Maureen for all that you have done and all that you will continue to do over this period of transition.
