Effects of Written Action Plan Adherence on COPD Exacerbation Recovery

2011

This study examined the effects of written action plans on COPD patients' recovery from exacerbations. It involved a one-year prospective cohort study of 252 patients with COPD who received an action plan and standing prescription for prednisone and antibiotics within three days of the exacerbation. In 40.1% of exacerbations, patients adhered to their action plans, reducing recovery time with statistical (p=0.0001) and clinical (-5.8 days) significance.
