Canadian Harkness Fellowship

The Canadian Harkness Fellowship enables some of the best and brightest Canadian thinkers and leaders to participate in the Commonwealth Fund's International Program in Health Policy and Practice.

Harkness Fellowships offer a unique opportunity for promising mid-career professionals who share our passion for improving healthcare - including health and social service providers, researchers, policy-makers, journalists and others with improvement experience. Canadian Fellows spend a year in the U.S., supported by a mentor, researching healthcare delivery system reform and critical issues that are on the current health policy agenda in the U.S. and Canada.

Following the fellowship, alumni can apply their knowledge and experience to healthcare improvements in Canada, and often progress to senior leadership positions within academia, government and healthcare organizations. Alumni benefit from the strong and lasting network of international contacts they develop through the fellowship.

The Harkness Fellowship awards include funding to cover a roundtrip airfare to the U.S., a living allowance, project-related travel and research, health insurance, and U.S. federal and state taxes. Supplemental funding for the Fellow’s accompanying family is also included.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we have decided to postpone the call for applications in 2020. The 2022–23 application will be announced in spring 2021. To be notified of the application details, subscribe to our newsletter.
