Momentum Challenge

In Canadian healthcare, there is tremendous opportunity to improve patient experience, health outcomes, work life of healthcare providers and value-for-money. The challenge facing those committed to improvement is the ability to spread proven innovations further across the country and to scale them to reach more people in Canada, regardless of their postal code.

The Momentum Challenge is a 12-month by-invitation program that brings together teams from completed Canadian Foundation for Healthcare Improvement collaboratives. Through the Challenge, we support teams so they can sustain and spread their improvement projects even further.

Fourteen teams from the INSPIRED COPD Scale, Connected Medicine  and New Brunswick Appropriate Use of Antipsychotics  (AUA) collaboratives joined the first cohort of the Momentum Challenge from April 2019 to April 2020. Following the demand for a second cohort, 50 teams from the Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island AUA  and Embedding Palliative Approaches to Care  collaboratives joined the Challenge in October 2019.

Registration for the Momentum Challenge is currently closed. Teams participating in CFHI collaboratives will be notified of future opportunities to join the Challenge.

How the Momentum Challenge contributes to better healthcare in Canada

The Momentum Challenge is part of CFHI’s strategy to drive the rapid adoption of proven innovations through spread and scale. Teams are supported so they can build on the momentum of their existing improvement projects and sustain long term success, delivering more improvement to more people, that lasts.

To measure the ongoing benefit to healthcare in Canada, teams provide relevant data on outcomes and patients reached.

As of November 2019, 93 percent of teams that submitted data had sustained their quality improvement initiatives and 60 percent spread it further to benefit more people.

Team benefits

Participation in the Momentum Challenge has been designed to be flexible and complement the important work teams are already doing.

In addition to receiving national recognition for their improvement work, Momentum Challenge teams have exclusive access to improvement coaches, clinical and change management experts, learning opportunities, tools and resources.

There is no fee for teams to participate in the Momentum Challenge, and teams also have the chance to receive financial awards. A total of more than $480,000 in awards will recognize measurable impact and reward success in moving the dial on relevant key indicators and increasing the number of patients reached.

Teams collaborate with a wider, pan-Canadian community of people dedicated to healthcare improvement. This provides fantastic opportunities to share their experiences and learn from each other to improve the sustainability and spread of their improvement projects.
